The winner of the burda style Talent Award loves the fashion of the 1950s and 1960s

What makes the dress so special to you?

I was given the pattern at the première of the Aenne Burda film (not available in English yet), which I was able to attend as the winner of the burda style Talent Award context. That makes the pattern even more special. And I love the style of the 1950s!

Why did you choose exactly this fabric?

I wanted to use a simple fabric to showcase details such as the lapel collar and pleats. I found the thin, crisp blue cotton fabric at the fab-ric market and thought it would be perfect for the pattern.

What do you love the most about your hobby?

When I wear one of the pieces I made myself, it always fills me with pride as it often took days of work to create and I know that nobody else has the same piece hanging in their wardrobe. You don’t see lots of retro fashion on the racks and it’s possible to adjust every aspect of the piece to your own figure and taste.

Instead of cuffed sleeves, Hannah used form-fitting 3/4 sleeves. Clearly retro, yet classical and always fashionable. This piece solves the dilemma beautifully: shirt dresses are true all-rounders. Our version was inspired by the fashion of the 1950s: the simple blue cotton fabric highlights the lapel collar and pleats. The belt with a hand-covered buckle and hand-embroidered eyelet accentuates the waistline and gives the look an elegant vintage touch. Perfect for pumps – or cool trainers that skilfully lighten up the look.

How would you describe your style in general?

Classical pieces of clothing with small special details and a vintage touch. A pattern that fits well and good fabric quality are particularly important to me as they make it easy to enjoy the pieces for a long time. With jeans and a blouse, I always feel well dressed.

Why did you choose the romantic retro blouse?

Frill collar and eased sleeves in one pattern: a dream come true! Thanks to the the floral fabric from Liberty, these details are very effective.

What do you like about sewing?

I love the whole process and find it completely relaxing – except in the moments when the machine acts up. When I’m sewing, I forget everything around me: the time, meals...

What is so special about the car coat?

The model made me curious because I previously saw several variants that inspired me and showed me how versatile the pattern is. Vintage, yet clean and modern.

The tailor mostly makes garments with original patterns from burda moden magazines

How did you come up with the idea of sewing models from old burda moden magazines?

When I was an apprentice tailor, someone gifted me a box of old pattern magazines, including some from burda moden. At that time the patterns were too much for me, but I didn’t throw or give them away. The box and its contents withstood quite a few removals and the film about Aenne Burda made me remember it. I started to use the patterns. It is a lot of fun to breathe life into the fashion of those days. My customers love the models too: women’s, men’s and chil-dren’s clothing from that time is on exhibit in my workshop.
