How to sew a lavallière collar or a tie collar?

 1.  Construct the tie band

Fold the pattern pieces right side facing in and stitch the band up to each marking (the section between the markings will be sewn to the edge of the neckline later). If you are not sure whether the tied bow will be big enough later (or perhaps too big!), first cut the pattern piece from a fabric scrap (use a similar type of fabric with a similar drape). Then stitch as instructed above, with the right side facing in, turn right side out, and press. Now you can tie the "collar" around your neck to test it out; this will allow you to see whether the proportions are suitable before you actually sew the collar. By the way, this is also relevant if you sew the blouse from a different fabric other than the one we specify. Of course, you can also make the tie neck collar wider.

 2.  Trim the seam allowance

Trim the seam allowance at the corners. The tie bands will then lie perfectly flat on the finished garment.

 3.  Prepare the collar

Make small slits into the seam allowance exactly at the markings on the collar. (Important: Cut just within the seam allowances, otherwise the incisions will be visible later.) This will make it easier to pin and stitch the collar to the edge of the neckline. Now turn the collar right side out and gently poke out the corners.

 4.  Sew on the collar

Then pin and stitch the inside edge of the tie band collar to the edge of the blouse neckline. This is exactly between the clipped markings from step 3. Now press the seam allowances of this edge onto the collar.

 5.  Final touch

Press the seam allowance of the outside collar onto the wrong side of the fabric. Then pin and stitch it to the blouse. Press the finished collar. Done!
