Be it for reasons of comfort or due to your choice of fabric - a lining has many advantages. here we show you how to cut out and sew a lining for trousers!
General tip
Usually, trousers are lined just to the knee. Measure the front trouser piece to determine how much lining you will require.
Our sewing instructions generally do not include a lining for trousers. A lining, however, has the advantages of extra comfort, extra warmth in winter, and is recommended for trousers made of leather.
STEP 1
To cut out, lay the pattern piece on the lining so that the upper edge (waist) lies on the fold edge. The selvages will form the bottom edges and not require a hem. Since there is no stitching at the bottom edges, nothing will show throug to the right side of the garment.
STEP 2
Cut out the lining pieces with the same seam allowances as for the fabric pieces. Transfer all markings from the pattern pieces to the lining. Pin the right side of the lining pieces to the wrong fabric side of the front trouser pieces and baste round all edges. Then treat these pieces as one layer of fabric.
Full trousers lining
This type of lining is required for leather trousers – but also if you notice that the fabric is not comfortable on the skin during wear or if it tends to “stick” to socks and stockings.
- - The lining pieces are cut the same as the pieces of top fabric (without the waistband). If there are hip yoke pockets, stick the front trouser piece to the hip yoke piece before cutting out so that the pocket opening edge meets at the side seam with the marked abutting line (see illus.). This will create a dart at the upper edge which is folded on the lining.
- - Construct trousers lining, press and pin into finished trousers with wrong sides facing. Seams must match exactly. Now turn in edge of lining and pin at waistband joining seam. Pin centre seams of top fabric and lining together at end of zip opening.
- - Turn lining to inside next to marked centre front at edge of trousers underlap at the width of the underlap and pin to tape of zip fastener. Clip other edge of lining at an angle 0.75 cm (a good 1/4”) into corner spaced 1 cm (3/8”) above end of opening close to teeth of zip.
- - Then turn in edge of lining and sew on at zip tapes and at waistband joining seam by hand.
- - Finally, turn in hem of trousers lining and stitch – it should be about 2 cm (3/4”) shorter than the trousers.
