DIY: Upcycle Old Jeans Into a Decorative Pouf

Do you have old jeans lying around in your closet and you don't know what to do with them? Don’t throw them away! With this DIY sewing project, you can transform them into a trendy and practical pouf for your home. Not only will this add a touch of originality to your decor, but it will also allow you to practice upcycling and creatively reuse your fabric scraps.

In this article, we'll guide you step by step to create a patchwork jean pouf, perfect for recycling your textiles while crafting a stylish and durable piece.

SUPPLIES

  • Old jeans or jean scraps
  • Old sheets or cotton scraps
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Zipper (60 cm)

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: PREPARE

First, sew matching pieces of jeans to each other – we mostly used children’s and men’s jeans for the pouf. We offset some of the pieces to create contrast, adding pieces with pockets, pieces without pockets, and lighter and darker washes.

STEP 2: CUTTING OUT AND STITCHING

Seat piece:  Cut the whole thing into five strips of equal width, stitch them together, and cut out a circle with a diameter of about 60 cm (23 5/8 in) out of them. We did this with an homemade “compass" by tying a string to a (chalk) pen, fixing the string on the fabric with a needle, and drawing a circle.

Back Piece: Cut six strips of the same width and stitch them together in groups of three. Cut out one semicircle from each piece (long edge: 60 cm (23 5/8 in)) and sew a zip onto the long edge.

Side piece: Sew the strips on to each other again. Stitch them together along the narrow edges and then stitch them to the circles, i.e. the seat and the bottom.

STEP 3: LINING

Cut out two circles with a diameter of 60 cm (23 5/8 in) and cut out the matching side piece.

Stitch the side piece to the circles, but leave a small slit open for turning it inside out.

Fill the lining with polystyrene beads or foam flakes and then stitch it closed.

Now open the zip and slide this “inner cushion” into the jeans cover. Close the zip.

Finished!

And now you know how to make this jean pouf! It's perfect for giving a second life to your old jeans while adding a unique touch to your interior. This upcycling project not only allows you to recycle your fabric scraps, but also to create a practical and aesthetic object, ideal to complete your decor. Whether you use it as an occasional seat or a simple decorative element, this handmade pouf is a superb idea for combining creativity and sustainability.
