DIY: Sewing a croissant bag

In the world of fashion, croissant bags have become the must-have accessory, adding a curved touch of elegance to every outfit. These rounded, trendy bags are not only appealing but also incredibly practical for carrying your everyday essentials.

In this DIY tutorial, we will guide you step by step to create your own handcrafted croissant bag.

  • Exterior denim fabric (Katag)

  • Cotton fabric for the lining

  • If required, iron-on G 785 interfacing (Vlieseline Freudenberg)
  • Zipper:
For the small pocket: 30 cm (11 7/8 in)
For the long, big pocket: 40 cm (15 3/4 in)
  • Thread (Gütermann)
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Straight pins
  • Seam gauge
  • Fabric scissors (Prym)
  • Tape measure (Burda Style)

You can find the pattern for the croissant bag in your September 2023 issue of Burda Style or available for free, to download at the end of this article.

Cut out all pieces with a 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance all around

  • 21 - Inner bag: Cut 2 pieces on the fold.

  • 22 - Outer bag: Cut 2 pieces on the fold.

  • 23 - Strap: Cut 1 piece on the fold, and for added stability, you can reinforce the back with fusible interfacing.

  • 24 - Lining: Cut 2 pieces on the fold.

Fold the pleats in the direction of the arrow on the outer handbag pieces and baste in place. Pin outer pieces to the inside handbag pieces, wrong side to right side, and stitch 0.5 cm (1/4 in) to fix in place.

Stitch the zipper to the top edges of the handbag pieces. Open the zipper. Stitch the pieces together at the curve, right sides together.

Stitch the long edges of the strap, right sides together. Press the seam allowance apart. Turn the strap inside out and press the seam at the center.

Stitch the strap ends to the top of the handbag between the short edges (the strap is on the inside and the strap seam will later be at the bottom). If you want knots, tie them before stitching the strap and slide them to the desired position.

Close the lining at the curve. At the remaining edges, press the allowance inward. Pull the lining wrong sides together over the handbag and sew on by hand. Then turn the bag right side out.

All done !
