Another way of making a single welt pocket. It's a bit more fastidious, but the results are very precise. After one practice round I was confident enough to make both my final welts for my Franzi Vest. Most of these pictures are from the final, but some are from my trial run.
Franzi fronts, crepe backed satin for welt/pocket, thread (DTM and contrast for basting), scissors, fusible interfacing

I just want to say thank you for this tutorial. I was having a really tough time with a Simplicity pattern that over-complicated the welt pocket (7 layers of fabric!?) and I’m now going to just install my own with this tutorial!

Here’s a link to my work in progress. This article was a major help in completing the pockets. My only advice is that when sewing down the wing tips, you make sure everything is nice and tight; with a little bit of pressure, pull the pocket material to ensure its nice and flat with little bulk… I had to seam rip once to get it right.

This is one amazing tutorial! Instructions are very clear and straightforward, I’ve just managed to sew a pair of single welt pockets, finally as close to perfect as they can be :) and without a trial run! Thanks for sharing!

Wow you saved my life!!!! I’m sewing a skirt from BurdaStyle Spain and I don’t udrestand the instructions for the single welt pocket. I am latina, I speak spanish, but I sew in english hehehhehe. Your pictures are perfect, you can see every detail. Do you have any other tutorials???? Thanks!

I’m thrilled that my tutorial was so helpful!
I only have 2 other tutorials and they are project specific. I would love to make more tutorials but that will happen as I make something with a fussy technique worth documenting.

Thanks for this tutorial. Welt pockets are one of fashion’s stickier details. Your photos and written instructions are great. Nehmah

Thank you for posting the directions. They were understandable and clear. I was able to use the technique in a pair of pants and am going to use it again when I make my husband a vest.
