I was asked to help test one of the new Colette Patterns designs: the Ceylon dress. As with the other Colette Patterns designs I’ve worked with, the pattern was a dream to sew up, and in no time (I did it in a weekend–right before we left for our Virginia trip) I had a lovely dress! The fabric I picked out was not my first or preferred choice, a green polyester from JoAnn Fabrics. But, at the time, I didn’t have any other options. Quite happily though, I love how the bright color works with the pattern’s lines and even the fabric isn’t half bad (I normally shy away from polyester)! I also made a little self-fabric belt (not included in the pattern) because I’m obsessed with matching belts. lol. This dress has fast become one of my top favorites; it’s the right balance of lady-like charm and classic style. (In fact, I think this might be my Christmas dress this year!)

Love, love, love! The design is lovely to begin with, but you’ve put it together perfectly. I wasn’t sure which of the new Colette patterns I was going to get, but now this is definitely one of them.

So cute. I used to make belts all the time. – I love the fabric covered ones – BUT the kits are way hard to find.

I actually have developed a way to make belts without the kits (which I haven’t been able to find in well over two years) and just random buckles that I collect. I actually will be doing a tutorial on that next year for another website, so I’ll post about it when I do! :)

Oh, this is simply stunning! You’re so very talented. It puts my in mind of January Jones on MadMen. I don’t watch the show, but I’ve seen a few clips. All I can say is wow. I love it!

Oh so pretty… I’ll be off to the Colette website next (she’ll owe you some freebies soon methinks!!). It’s really inspiring to see such pretty dresses because it makes you give it a go making your own. This one is not the easiest of patterns I reckon. So well made, really impressive! The dress really suits you as well, you look fantastic!!
By the way, Vintage Vogue is another great place to shop for dresses like these, be sure to look in the Out-Of-Print section as well as the Vintage Vogue section.

Thank you! :) The pattern isn’t super easy, but having made a couple dresses with similar details (such as topstitched yokes and such), it wasn’t too difficult. ;)
I love all the VV patterns! I actually have quite a little stash of those going… lol!
