Oh, yeah, go ahead, you can laugh… I KNOW this thing is ugly !
But this was en experiment, and a good one too.
As I mentioned before (see my “normal” camera case), last summer I went on a 3 weeks cycling trip from Bucharest to Istanbul, and needed something light though resistant to protect my camera. The other case was made for a film SLR camera (small stuff, few buttons). My camera is a big digital SLR one > lots of buttons everywhere, a screen at the back… On a bike you need to carry stuff as small as possible, so I didn’t want to make a big case : I decided to make something shoot-through.
I didn’t have much time to make it before the trip so the finishings are not the finest but that doesn’t matter.
The stuff is made of 2 “sockets”, both reinforced with a 1cm thick foam rubber, and two layers of fabric (cotton on the inside, deckchair/outdoor fabric on the outside) :
- one for the lens (not seen on the pictures, but that’s just a tube, closed at one end, that I strap on to the body on the other end);
- one for the body, with holes matching the position of the buttons and screen on the camera body.
You can remove it by opening the velcros on the sides.
I never took the time to finish the top part, but the way it is, I can keep my finger on the shutter release.
So, this ugly thing actually allows me to protect my camera while i’m cycling, and to be able to shoot in a second (just by remove the lens “tube”), and then review my picture on the screen without removing the protection (and access all the buttons).
It needs to be perfected, but the idea is ok, I think. My problem now is that I just got a new camera, and the new one is too small for this cover… have to start all over again !
(If anyone has a Canon EOS 300D and wants and ugly cover for free, give me your adress and I’ll send it over ;) ).
And one last thing : while travelling, it’s okay if your camera looks ugly : thieves will be less attracted by it …
Inner layer : cotton 1 cm foam rubber Outter layer : deckchair fabric (rain resistant)

This is not ugly! It’s brilliant. A cover like this is exactly what I need for my camera too. Great job!

Okay I have to admit, I had to face one problem, while on the trip : the camera sometimes got too warm. The problem was due to different facts : - the temperature was over 40°C everyday from 11am to 4.30pm - the camera was sometimes travelling in its cover inside the saddlebag (black plastic hit by the sun all day long > very warm inside) - the camera was a bit old. So, i had to remove the cover and let it cool down for a while. I guess if you travel in cooler areas the problem wont happen.

I love what you did here. And it allows for various lense sizes? Brilliant.

Thanks ! The cover i made for the lens was just the length of the lens (so i guess i should have made one for each length i had). But I guess the diameter doesnt change much from one lens to another, so you can use it with any of them.

Thanks for posting your project! I’ve got a similar problem – haven’t been able to find a commercial camera case that is truly functional/protective for my digital SLR and active traveling. I’ve been thinking about making something like this, so it was great to see that you accomplished it. Good luck with your next one!
