Shoes for Somebody's Baby

Tri Cities, Wash...

I fell in love with this striped sweatshirt fabric several months ago, so I bought a few yards. It looked like it had so much rock-n-roll potential. This is the first thing I made with it. The skull/circle canvas I used on the soles of the shoes is such a great print, too. I’m glad I found a project where I could combine the two fabrics. I only wish I had made these before my babies stopped being babies.

The pattern for these shoes is found on Stardust Shoes’ blog http://stardustshoes.blogspot.com/2006/10/cloth-shoe-pattern.html (Thank you for providing a really great free pattern for the world, Joanna!)
I embroidered the patches on my Bernina. The hat pictured is from Simplicity 5316.

Oh, how lovely! And just in the right moment – a collegue from office just got her first baby two days ago and I was just thinking what I could sew for the little one :-) Just a question: Your ones look much softer and comfortable than the original – did you used very thick fusible lining or is it just the fabric? Thanks for helping :-)

The striped fabric is kind of like a quilted sweatshirt fabric. And it’s stretchy. It has pretty big ribs which are stuffed with cotton. The fabric I used didn’t need batting because it’s already so thick and warm. (And super soft.) But the pattern requires a lining to finish the edges around the ankle. So except for the soles, I didn’t use any batting, I just used some charcoal colored knit for the lining.
Hope that helps! Let me know if it’s unclear.
