This pattern takes some elements of Burdastyle’s Ruby Shorts #6005 and adds a twist to make them into sailor shorts. To create this garment you’ll need to get the Ruby pattern and also download the extra pieces I have designed. The shorts sit on the waist just below the belly button and fastens with 10 functional buttons, five on each side.
*NOTE: all pattern pieces already include 5/8" seam allowance
1.25 yds of stretch twill, stretch popling (as shown above), linen, cotton, gabardine, lightweight corderoy, or any bottom weight fabric
multipurpose thread of matching color
10 buttons (5/8" – 1"; mine were 5/8" in diameter)
3/4 yard of medium weight interfacing
Intermediate

I’m trying to make these but I can’t seem to get the additional pieces to print out at the right scale. I downloaded the Original Ruby shorts pattern and printed it without a problem, but the additions to make them into sailor shorts are way too huge to print out at home. There are two pages to print but when I print out on 8.5 × 11 paper only a small portion of the pattern prints.
I’m not sure if anyone else had this problem. Any advice?

Hi GriseldaR-
I’ve just gotten around to taking a look at this problem. I’m not sure I can upload the pattern differently, yet I can see that when you download the pattern it comes out HUGE. I believe the solution to this problem is to set your printer menu correctly. You must make sure that the setting is on “adjust page to fit paper”. This automatically scales it to the correct size.
Hope this helps!

I downloaded this, but it only has two pages. There doesn’t seem to be a page for a main body of the shorts, just the button placket and waistband. Help!

I am only providing the pattern to turn the ruby shorts into sailor shorts. To recreate the whole look you must also buy and download burdastyle’s pattern. I cannot provide the main part of the shorts, because I did not come up with those pieces.

Hi Lala86,
I made that pattern pieces to fit a size 34. If you want to take a different size you’ll need to make my pieces a little bit bigger to fit the Ruby pattern in that size.

Many thanks for a great look. I prefer the slanted pocket look to the sailor flap front. I’ll be using this for granddaughters next summer. Cordially, Nehmah
