Description

This skirt was inspired by a Louis Vuitton leather skirt from the fall 2010 collection. I have detailed instructions to make this skirt in my blog, The Dupioni Lounge.

Material Notes

I used brocade, but I think other fabrics such as silk taffeta or heavyweight cotton would be suitable to support the pleats. I have modified the Butterick 5032 pattern to create this skirt.

I bought a black and silver brocade skirt by DKNY in a thrift store some years ago that looks exactly the same! Very nice skirt.

I have been throwing this kind of skirt around in my head for about a year, thanks now I have to do it. I even have great fabric for it. You did a really nice job. I love to see people making and adjusting patterns even when they think they do not know what they are doing. But you do.

I look forward to seeing your beautiful skirt! Thanks so much for the compliment. I’ve been enjoying learning to sew. I’ve learned the most from making tremendous mistakes (and trying to recover from them).

Beautiful! Thank you so much for the detailed blog instructions too. My mum showed me a picture of that Louis Vuitton skirt a few months ago, I may make her (and myself) one now (or send her the link to your blog, depending on time and energy ;-)

Thank you! I have a photo of me in the skirt on my blog, but only from the top of my waistline down. It’s such a bright skirt that I’ve been pairing it with solids (navy or black). It looks best with a blouse you can tuck in or a sweater that hits right above the pleats.

Oh, I love the pleats! Going to check out your blog post right away :) (also that’s such a scrumptious fabric. Is it supporting itself completely or do you have a crinoline/petticoat underneath it?)

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! Yes, there is a crinoline on the dress form underneath the skirt to give it fullness. If you click on the Instructions section on my project you can see the skirt without a crinoline.
