I fell in love with this fabric as it reminded me of a dress of my sister’s I used to covet when we were girls.
I wanted to play with the stripes and the pleats in the Marie skirt are perfect for creating the diagonal lines I wanted to achieve. However the stripey cotton fabric is a much lighter weight then recommended for the Marie skirt, so I felt a flirty little dress would be more suitable then a tailored looking skirt.
The alterations I made are as follows:
I added a centre front and back seam, so I could cut one half of each piece upside down, to make the stripes symmetrical, I left off the waist band and added a dress bodice of my own making, echoing the skirt pleats, I decreased the size of the pleats in the skirt to make them more suitable for the drape of the fabric and so I could match the stripes, and finally I shortened the hemline whilst maintaining the tulip shape.

oh, Ally. You didn’t dilly dally! Vibrant and fun. And a great story about the dress from your childhood.
