This dress was a part of a contest with Burdastyle and Westminster. I got to pick a Burdastyle magazine pattern and a style of Liberty Art Fabric to make a garment. I chose the Shift Dress from 5/2010 #140 Burdastyle pattern and the Meadow Pattern in Gold for my fabric. I didn’t end up having lots of time to make this, so I stuck with the original pattern shape. I did however, have to cut it down to the smallest size listed and then add baby seam allowances, as I didn’t really look at the sizing before I picked it! Needless to say, it took two mock-ups and still some final fittings to fit well!
I fully lined the dress with a beautiful golden yellow fabric and put in an exposed metal zipper all the way down the back. Overall, I was very pleased with the color and feel of the cotton fabric, it will make a lovely dress to wear on the sunny Seattle days!
These photos were taken at Kerry Park – one of the loveliest views of Seattle!

its all about the back zip… you look amazing, the fit is perfect. After seeing your version, I will be making it (lined) in a nice lightweight black wool for work. Thank you for posting!!!

Thanks! I will say to make a muslin first, the pattern is actually quite large and I had to cut it down. Also, you might want to get a wool with a bit of lyrca/spandex, as the fit is so close it is not super easy to sit in!! But still fun to wear!

What size pattern did you use? I can’t imagine you’re a size 8 but that is the smallest it’s made for. I want to make this but need a smaller size!

I am a size 8 – except for my hips, they’re a bit larger. It was the size 44. Usually, I am closer to a 40, but this was a done in a non-stretchy cotton, so it could be a bit larger. If I remember correctly, I cut it down to the smallest size and then added only 1/4" to the bodice, blended out to 1/2" on bottom half and then sewed at 5/8" on the actual garment. I had to fit it a bit under the bust and over the front of the hips before finishing it, but it was not as bad as it could have been. I’d definitely recommend a mock up before hand (I always use sheets from goodwill instead of buying muslin – it’s cheaper!)

This is really pretty and the zipper is unusual and fun. Great job!

Beautiful! Especially the exposed zip was a great idea, it gives an unexpected twist to the dress.
