The Helena skirt is a brand new pattern download created by BurdaStyle member Sarah Magill. This adaptable skirt pattern would drape wonderfully in denim, cotton, twill or tweed. Take Sarah’s cue from her sketches and try the skirt with front pockets and buttons, or for an easier project eliminate the front button placket and cut the front of the skirt on the fold.
Perfect for the weather right now, you can wear this skirt with tights or leggings, with your favorite rock t-shirt, a vintage blouse or a cute jacket. We find this skirt pattern so versatile, that depending on the fabric used, the shape really works for a lot of different fashion personalities and styles. Have fun with it!
1.25m 150cm OR 1.5m 115cm (1.3 yds 65” OR 1.6 yds 45”) fabric

This skirt is actually perfect for my GCSE textiles project, I am going to make a blouse and add it to the top and make it a dress !!!

Well, I just realized (which should have been obvious!) that I will have to add a zipper. I think I am sleep deprived. I am trying to make something that more or less looks like the top right hand version in your illustrated sketches. I will go buy some notions and let you know if I’m still having problems!

Hi! I love this pattern, but I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out how to attach the waistband. Perhaps it’s because I’m not using the buttons and have it as just one whole front piece. Waistbands get me every time. Any way you could dumb it down for me?

Hi there,
How are you fastening the skirt and is it at the front/ side/ back. You need to remove the button stand from one end of the waistband, so that you remove some of the overlap. It’s difficult to know what your design looks like- maybe you could give me more detail?

There is a chart included in the instructions showing you how to lay out all the pieces.

check the layout grid. you place them numbers 1-4 first row and so on.

I’m scrolling through the pattern before I print it to see what page that little “4-inch square” or similar square is (so that I can measure to make sure my printing has not shrunken or enlarged the pattern). I don’t see it, does anyone know how I can tell if I’m printing it correctly?

Hi there,
I’m sorry, I forgot to put one on! Print with no scaling and check the waistband measurement against the chart, if you want to double check. I have printed and checked the pattern and it was perfect. You could also just check the distance from the seam allowance to the cutting line in your size, which should be 1.5cm or 5/8 inch.

Thanks for your comment. This skirt was inspired by a variety of sources, including Wiksten, Steven Alan, APC and countless others! This skirt style has been so popular I wanted to make my own version, so hand pattern-drafted and graded it for users on BurdaStyle! I hope you enjoy it! :)

I like this pattern, but I would probably modify it to sit a bit lower. I must love this pattern, as it has a very lovely name :)
The download worked for me, I’m also using Firefox.

Hey guys,
The download is working for me, I wonder if it’s a browser problem? I’m using Firefox. Let us know if you guys are still having an issue, it’s such a cute pattern we’ve got to get it working!

I’m sorry everyone! I worked with the creative director to get this up on the site, so don’t have access to edit it. I have contacted her and hopefully we can rectify the situation. Thanks for your positive comments so far.

Same problem with me – I got an ‘unsupported file format’ warning in Acrobat. Looks like a cute skirt, would love to download it once you get the files working.

Me Three! I tried removing the link and re-downloading. No such luck. It looks like the dreaded “weekend-lost-file-” curse has struck again. Ms Magill, I know it’s a chore, but would you please see if you can download the pattern once more? It’s a clever bubble skirt. And thank you for the multi-sizes. I appreciate the extra time and effort that you took to make the pattern available to more members. Cordially, Nehmah
