This is a re creation of a 1770’s robe a l’Anglaise a la polonaise. The dress itself is an open robe over a petticoat. Under the dress you wear a corset or ‘stays’ which are solid boning, and a supporting structure called pocket hoops. This project I worked on for two months prior to Halloween whenever I had time between clients work. You can buy the pattern on-line from J. P. Ryan
Almost any fabric can be used for the dress itself, your fabric choice will determine whether the gown is an evening or day dress. I used a satin for the robe, cotton for petticoat satin for stays and broadcloth for lining. The most expensive of materials is the 50m of featherlite boning without casing and another 4m of metal boning. In addition you need hooks and eyes and lacing material, as well as optional lace for flounce.
