You wouldn’t normally buy fabrics online unless you were looking for something specific but you could do Fabric.com, joann.com but personally I think that local stores offer the best. Plus you get to feel the fabric and have it now.

I agree. I’ve purchased from fabrics.com and there were a couple time when it wasn’t what I was hoping for. They do have great prices, though and usually have free shipping if you spend a certain amount.
you can request a catalog from http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/ they have a huge selection of fabrics. Hope this helps. Welcome to the word of sewing.

I’ve been buying fabric by post and on line for over 20 years now. It can be a bit of an adventure, but it’s loads of fun. I’ve rarely been disappointed, and frequently delighted with my purchases, especially when I’ve bought something dirt cheap intending to use it for toiles, and it’s turned out to be good enough for historical costumes and other garments. :)
I have a whole list of suppliers on my web site: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/KatePages/Resources/Expanded%20Fabric%20List/Fabric-list.htm

I tend to buy my fabric in person. I like to touch and feel and smell the fabric. I use to work in the retail clothing industry at the warehouse end of it and I could tell you stories of the awful smelling fabric that was imported and unpacked. That is my main reason for buying in person.

i have bought on ebay and craigslist. some ebay sellers will send a small sample to you before you buy. with craigslist i just plan a day i know i will be in their area. i’m not really close to anything either! i got an amazing deal on C.L. i bought almost 30 yards of 2 different types of fabric 50 + inches wide for $15. sometimes they will ship if they use paypal & you pay the shipping.

I’ve ordered off etsy.com and cia’s palette. I was happy with my purchases and cia’s palette even threw in a bonus 5in by 5in bit of another fabric just for fun!

This is a husband and wife that started on Etsy. I really like their prices and their service. But of course its quilting fabric. http://www.hawthornethreads.com/home

One of my favourite sites is http://www.shahtextiles.co.uk/
There is some AMAZING stuff on this site, from really exotic fabrics to pretty standard ones, but I love to fantasise over the exotica… =D
Or for more toned down and/or normal stuff, http://www.ebay.com is your best bet! =)

Hi everyone, I’m new to sewing and this forum, so hello!
To add to this question, Does anyone know a good place online (or a shop in Australia) where I can buy fabrics for sewing board shorts (surfing shorts), cycling jerseys, and swimwear?

I buy tons of fabric online, because the only place near me that sells fabric is a Joanns, and they don’t sell too much in the way of wool and other garment fabrics. My absolute favorite website is gorgeousfabrics.com — not bargain basement to be sure, but reasonable and everything I’ve ordered from there has been consistently gorgeous. I’ve also ordered from denverfabrics.com — I’m not as thrilled with them, good prices but very slow shipping, occasional lost packages, and sometimes the stuff that I get from them ends up looking/feeling more cheap that I expected. All of it eventually finds some use, but not always the use I had in mind for it…
