I got some beautiful rust colored crepe satin for this dress. I noticed that the directions call for the matte side to be the right side. The satin side of my fabric is so much more beautiful though. What would be the result of using that as the right side? Would it be a failure for some reason that is not apparent to me? I’m also considering omitting the pockets….they don’t seem useful and might ruin the way the skirt lays…

As you are sewing YOUR own dress, make the dress using the side of the fabric you want. That’s the freedom of making it yourself.
The only thing that comes to mind about using matte side is that it flatters more people. Satin can be hard to wear shiny side out if one is older (I’m not a makeup wearer and have some white hair but a lovely satin print might make me sew shiny side out if I love it).
