Okay, so as the title suggests, I am new to the sewing world and I am in need of some advice. I have read many a book, article, and watched thousands of YouTube videos and I’m still floundering. So I’m appealing to the BurdaStyle community for some 411.

Here’s the Sitch:

I’ve taken my measurements and while I have had some luck in finding resources for my skinnier counterparts, I am having a hard time finding any information for my Big & Tall brothers. I’m not really sure of my skills at altering patterns yet and I am working up the courage to start my first project but I want to make sure I have all of the information first.

Any tips, tricks or a 100 year old Kung Fu master with words of wisdom would be helpful.

Sincerely,
Sersi – Sewing Padwan in Distress…

Welcome, Start out simple, go to the library look for subjects you have mentioned above, it is much easier than buying books you may not need, maybe take a few lessons.

I am sure other members will have much more to add to help, keep asking questions. Good Luck

Look yourself out a good basic sewing manual. Something like the Dorling Kindersly or Reader’s digest ones. And something on altering patterns to fit. Mind you, if your menfolk are large enough to be significantly outside the larger fit men’s patterns, I do recommend learning to draft patterns properly from paper and pencil. Aldrich’s Metric Pattern Cutting for Men comes in handy here.

An easy fix for simple patterns is to quarter each pattern piece and add the extra needed for each piece in length and width to the middle of the piece. This works well for simple things like shirt bodies. It doesn’t work so well when you need to add to the front more than the back to accommodate a large tummy, or when altering trouser bodies…
