tried looking online for hook and eye tape or busks for corsets, but they are very expensive. looked around at local department stores, an upholstery store, area fabric supply shops, including a drapery shop in town, but they were more expensive than buying a corset custom made. any suggestions are sincerely appreciated—or leads to trustworthy sellers of these products. thanks.

They are the cheapest busks I have found. haven’t seen super cheap hook and eye tape though. Buying wholesale is also cheaper, and many corset supply websites offer that option.
Also the price usually reflects quality (emphasis on usually). Its what makes corsets so darned expensive.

Most of us buy corset-making supplies online from specialty suppliers. I’m a bit surprised by your comment that buying supplies costs more than buying a “custom-made corset” – in my experience, the latter is a lot more expensive. There are relatively inexpensive corsets, but I don’t think they are custom made for an individual. Hand-made yes, according to a fixed model, but not usually custom-made. Maybe I’m just quibbling over terms, though. I use hook and eye tape only on trial versions of a finished corset. I buy from Farthingales.com, but this is a Canadian company and there are other options in the US. But you’re right, supplies for making a corset tend to be expensive – I typically spend above 80$ Canadian before I’ve sewn a single stitch! A final thought – the people who know how to make corsets at low cost are often the theatre or film people – they may rent premade costumes but they often have to adjust or develop their own. Just a thought.

A custom built corset, properly made, will cost upwards of £400. You should be able to buy all the supplies, including coutil, busk, boning and bone caps, tapes and laces for about £40 from places like Vna Cava.
