Hi i love Burda Style and sewing, and getting new patterns!
I’ve been wanting to subscribe to the Burda magazine but i am quite confused and would like to know some things from someone who gets the magazine. If you can answer any of the following, please reply!

1. when i have clicked to subscribe from the Burda Fashion website i receive a posted letter to my house – which is in German! It even addresses me as Frau-line.
I tell the site i speak English and i am on the English version, but i cannot dish out my money to something i can’t understand.

2. does the magazine come in German or can it be English? (I’m pretty sure it can be.. how!!)

3. if English is an option and you didn’t experience what i am experiencing, how did you go about subscribing?

4. how many patterns come out per issue? is it worthwhile in subscribing over a long period of time? what does it contain?

5. are the instructions adequate (like the newer patterns on this website) or have they been interpreted and therefore confusing.

Hi if you go to the burda fashion website (link) this page covers subscriptions, at the bottom of the page there are 2 email addresses if you contact them using this they will contact you in english with how much etc and what to do. Or if you go to your newsagent (I think WH Smith & Boarders do it in the UK) they may stock it or will probably order it for you (can be more expensive though). I am planning on getting an English subscription sent here to Australia next year but currently a local newsagent is getting it (3 months late). As to if it is worth it, I think so, you get 40+ patterns (some are reworks of similar designs) and lots of useful info. I like it but maybe buy a couple of copies from a newsagent first to see if you loke it or not.

I did track down a magazine subscription site that does Australia but it still comes out about 3 months behind. I figured it would probably work out better seasons-wise to get it this way anyway. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to subscribe or not…

Burda patterns are the best patterns I have tried (I tried Modellina, Italian La Mia Boutique, Spanish Patrones).

Our local newspaper stores have the Burda magazine, so I don’t need to subscribe for it. During the ‘90ies the magazines were not translated into Serbian, hence I bought several issues in German (and I don’t know a word of German) – I use them as much as the translated ones, but I don’t ever read the instructions, no matter the language they’re written in.

Each issue contains around 20 normal sized patterns, 10 plus size patterns and 10 kids patterns, but the exact number of patterns can vary. Just before the Halloween season comes, the magazine offers some interesting costume patterns, and it sometimes contains patterns for men (costume, or everyday wear). Also, it contains few articles on various creative crafts that are more or less related to sewing, and it contains some good tips. Each pattern has its instructions – I’ve read many complaints on them, though (as I said, I don’t really read them myself).

In Serbia, the magazine costs around 3 euros per month, and I think that’s the best sewing investment I have ever had.

I had a subscription to burda and while its great I found the instructions quite difficult to follow for some things. Its as if they assume everyone is an expert and the lack of diagrams can compound my confusion, but online tutorials and refering to similar patterns usually helps me through. Totally worth it though!

I love my Burda Magazine subscription. I do agree with victorS about the instructions being hard to follow. Diagrams usually help me alot, but there are not many in the pattern instruction in the mag. I have found it to be challenging, but also has helped me grow as a seamstress. Sometimes patterns work out, and sometimes they don’t…but I usually end up learning something!.

Hello! I do subscribe to the wonderfully pattern packed Burda Magazine through GLP and in English. You can go directly to the website in English that I use here: http://www.glpnews.com/en/Crafts/Burda1.html .
Let me know if you have anymore question and I will do my best to answer and it looks like the other members have pretty much covered the rest of your questions. Oh and each magazine usually has a “Pattern in Pink” sewing course to help you learn how to use the Burda patterns. Novembers was a Camisole & panties that is pretty cute!

    Hi!
I think I had exactly the same thing, I ordered the English version and got a reply in German. Don’t worry, you’ll probably receive the English version (I did), just strange that they continue to do their communication in German.
Anyhoo, it’s a great magazine. There is not always stuff I want to make for myself, but there are also a lot of DIY tips and patterns for children clothing every month. Enjoy!

Hi all, I’ve not tried this myself but may do soon. There is this site called Newstand http://www.newsstand.co.uk/247-Sewing—Knitting/1995-BURDA-ENGLISH.aspx in the UK that looks like you can buy individual copies or subscribe for 2 or 3 or 4 etc months. It lets you choose how long you want to subscribe or if you just want one mag that’s fine to. It says it’s free delivery in the UK. Seems too good to be true but I think I’ll try it soon. The thing is, it doesn’t look like you can buy the current released issue, it would be for future issues so the next available issue at the moment is the 24th of Nov. I didn’t want to go for this as suspect there will be loads of Xmas type patterns/ideas which I don’t really need. If anyone tries it the Newstand website, maybe you could let us know how it was for you!

I’ve just had a look at that Newstand site again and it actually says they deliver to anywhere in the world. It’s not free delivery outside the UK though I don’t think :-( But could help those of you that can’t seem to get the English Burda mag anywhere else? :-)

Hi Hannnc and all the other aussie girls (and guys) I subscribe through www.magshop.com.au
They’ve been very helpful, I was originally buying my magazines each month from Boarders who are over 5 months behind so when I signed up I asked which magazine they would send me, because I knew they were only about 2 or 3 months behind and I didn’t want to miss the issues but they offered to send me the three previous issues, it saved me 3 more trips to Boarders!

Are the patterns paper patterns ready to use? I have tried my Borders and WH Smiths and can never find a copy and had to resort to buying Sew Magazine, which was good but only had 3 patterns ready to use on paper.

You need to trace or copy them first because the patterns overlap each other, but they are already the right size if thats what you mean. I really love my Burda magazines, so easy to whip up a complete outfit :) Maybe your boarders can take your name down to put a copy aside for you?

Wow thank you so much for your feedback! It all seems much clearer now.
I had no idea Borders would sell them, and perhaps 5 months behind would work out with the season differences. I think it might be best to check out single magazines before i subscribe.. OR it could be a nice Christmas present :)
It will be my first time using a trace style pattern. I am keen to check it out now!
I think diagram instructions are much more helpful but as victorS mentioned, you can find help all over the internet! You all have proven how helpful forums are :)
Thank you all again, each one of your replies made me understand it much better. Ill let you know how i go once i buy one.. i might be waiting 2 weeks when my university exams are over!!

I’m also in Australia and thought I would let you guys know there is another way to subscribe to Burda. I’m just finishing up a year long sub I bought thru isubscribe.com. The price went up to $190 and I was always 3 months behind so I took up the suggestion from some friends from Patternreview.com. If you email burda@guell.de and ask for a quote to have a sub for Australia they will give you a price (about 66 Euros) that works out way, way cheaper that anything you can get here. They will reply with instructions on how to pay. I asked them to start me on the November issue, as that was when my other sub ran out. I had the Nov issue in the first week of the month. I am still waiting for my Sept & Oct to arrive!

Hi Auntchelle, I looked into this and yes way cheaper, can I ask how you paid, when I enquired they wanted me to email my credit card details (something I am not overly happy with) or to phone them (time difference issues) so it would be good to know how yours worked. The Burda sub is one of my christmas prezzies so I would like to get it sorted. Thanks in advance Jude

Jude – while I wasn’t totally comfy emailing my credit card it did it that way.
