Hi there
I am making a shirt as a gift for a friend. I’m using Burda 7866 (I hope this link works) and I’d like to change the neckline so that it is lower cut. She is slim and busty so I think this will suit her better.
At the moment, the instructions for the neckline involve making sort of a knit bias tape sewn to the edge and turned under to finish. Not sure if this will be the best method if I make a larger neckline. So my questions are: do I go ahead and just cut a bigger hole for the neckline or are there tips for getting this right? And, any ideas on how to best finish this neckline.
Thanks!

The easiest way for you to get the neckline you want would be to look for another pattern that has it. It is very easy to use pieces from different patterns in the same garment, so you could use the sleeve pattern from the Butterick pattern and the bodice patern from whatever other pattern you find. If you find that the new pattern with the correct neckline isn’t correct for the body of the dress you’ll have a little more work to do. Matching the shoulder seam lines, lay the pattern with the rounded neck over your original pattern. After you’ve cut the neckline seam remove the top pattern and follow the cutting lines for the Butterick pattern. The other lower body cutting lines may not exactly line up but you can just blend the lines as smoothly as you can.
Also, here is a website that has altering information for all your altering needs: http://aces.nmsu.edu/pubs/_c/c-228.html Good luck!

Also the pattern you have has a boat neckline which might go too drapy if you deepen the neckline becuase of the width of the neck opening. You probably would be better of modifying the bodice neckline from the Lydia pattern as it has a wider shoulder.
