Take a look in the pattern catalogues online and see what she likes. Steer her away from anything with lots of lace and pleats!

A sneaky bit of advice is to look seriously at this pattern: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=2593

While boned to stay up, it isn’t a fully structured dress. Buy her a well fitting strapless bra and get to work. A HUGE area of fitting issues are avoided by it being strapless, and if she wants her shoulders covered for the ceremony, and some lace, make a lace shrug or a big wrap shoulder collar for the dress. remember that hemlines can be altered!

You need to take a careful set of measurements and do a Full Bust Adjustment to the pattern.

Make a toile, and bone that when you do the fitting. Make a long one for the bride and short ones for the bridesmaids. And yess, floaty chiffon or tulle over a satin with work well with this. There’s a similar but more structured Vogue wedding dress pattern you can also consider:

Vogue also has a pattern for ties.
