At the bottom of the post form there is a really cryptic note “Copy and past the tags below into your comment field to format your text” – and then below that is “Add a link to your post” and “Add an image to your post”. Neither of these instructions is particularly clear. I have tried various forms for the “image” tag to no avail – not sure if the problem is getting the tag right, or that the function simply doesn’t work. Furthermore, the note that pasting the tags in will “format your text” is weird. How will it format the text? It seems to me this is badly stated. Something more is needed here!

Hello getwoods.
The websites uses Textile syntax, so embedding images are more easy than direct HTML.
See this page at wikipedia for a quick Textile reference.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

A left parenthesis is %28 (percent 28); a right parenthesis is %29 (percent 29). This is supposed to be easier? so @"this page at wikipedia":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textile_%28markup_language%29 @

Hey getwood, Luis’s link is broken, but here it is again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textile_
Basically Textile is a simplified way to style text that is super easy to learn. For right now, we just put a couple of references, but we will enhance it over time. Or, even add a WYSIWYG editor that allows you just to click a button to bold something etc.

Yikes, I did it wrong, apologizes.
Parenthesis are actually not allowed in URLs, but web browsers are kind with the users and don’t complain.
What I should have done is put the link as a Textile URL (using double quotes for the text, then double colon and the link). That should have worked :-)
Will to it much better, next time :-D

I appreciate the information about Textile, although the information needs to be posted on the website somewhere, with a hotlink that works. I should add, however, that I embedded a flickr photo’s url into the inverted exclamation points and the image was NOT displayed. The coding was read, however, as the inverted marks did not show up on the finished message – it’s just that the url was not read and turned into an image. So I think this part, at least, does not work.

OK, I see the problem with the images… so ignore my last comments. Thanks!

We used to be able to pop pix into replies, but there are no buttons for doing that now… And copying and pasting etc. for links and pix is not at all intuitive or easy for those of us with problems. Dyslexics have serious difficulty with this sort of thing, especially when the typeface on the site is so small and so monochrome… Lots of the forums I use have a nice, easy to find clicky button for all these functions. Could that not be done here? I am really put off trying to post any more pix as it is so awkward. The old site was bad enough, but this is sorely trying.

I’ve been getting into using more html coding since working on my BSC club page at Ning, however I don’t mind trying out codes etc there since I can easily go back and edit what I typed incorrectly, here, you guys have taken away our ability to edit our own posts so you only get one shot! I’ve tried these textiles and have had a few problems getting used to them. I’d like to learn and try to use them more but I think most people wont bother trying until you give us back our freedom to edit our own words :(

I agree with those above who find it disturbing not to be able to edit posts, and to have to use code to edit typed text, or to add links or pictures in posts. To increase the chances of us using textile, I think there HAS to be information about it in direct access to the text-box (as it used to be on the old site), I know I can’t be bothered to look at wikipedia everytime I want to try something… so I dont. And I think I won’t in the future either. I spent half of high school learning to word-process documents using commands to no use (then came apple and modern computer programs, phew), so coding text to me feels very very backward and uninteresting (I do hope it’s not the future!), unless I use it to code websites. So, please change from coding to using buttons, please please please!

Hey IchiGoGirl,
We will add that to the list, especially the bit about at least listing the code!

Um…I think this is where I need to be, but I’m not sure.
I want to post something in the Sewing Advice forum with a photo of a dress about which I’d like some advice. I took a digital photo, but how do I upload it? All I see at the bottom of the posting page is a line that says:
Add an image to your post:
But I don’t HAVE a url. I just have a jpg on my memory card. Please…how do I upload this photo?
Thanks! Susanna

I remember seeing instructions for this somewhere, but I’m not sure I can find where now :(
What I usually do is load an image to flickr and then link to the flickr image – not quite kosher, perhaps, but it gets the job done!

I don’t often post pics but when I do I use a free photobucket account, it has this handy feature where you can copy the correct link and paste it straight in and your image just shows up.
