It’s not often that my husband* goes shopping for clothes, so when I saw him eyeing off a simple casual vest at the shops, I thought to myself, I’ve got a pattern for that!

I used the Burdastyle’s Jason pattern with a few adjustments to lengthen the vest slightly and improve the fit around the back and at the armscye. The pattern was simple to sew and I enjoyed this method of making welt pockets.

Husband did not like the upper pockets, so I made only the two lower welt pockets. And of course, the customer is always right – so even though I wanted to do a surprise contrast polka-dot tightening strap at the back, or even just use the polka-dot fabric as lining for the tightening strap, I was overruled. Oh well, at least I got to use the polka-dots for the lining of the vest. Husband chose his own buttons from Spotlight- chubby copper-toned ones, I think it gives the vest a little bit of a steampunk feel.

It’s been a surprisingly versatile item of clothing – suitable for weddings, work and casual wear depending on what it’s worn with.
