This coat dress was inspired by my recent study abroad to Europe and seeing the birthplace of Balenciaga at his hometown of Getaria, Spain. He grew up on the waters of the English Channel and I felt a connection as having grown up in the state of Michigan, which is also surrounded by water. I decided to do a simple and chic Balenciaga trapeze style silhouette and mix in design elements I enjoy – digital textile printing and creative seaming.

The digital textile print is the same one used for my “Lady of the Lake” piece that can be seen in my gallery. The collar and “cuffs” are digitally printed on cashmere/silk blend (80% and 20%). The collar is a modified butterfly style that borders on a Puritan collar. This coat dress and that piece will be featured in my last student collection, “Kindred Waters.”

The inside of the gathered puff sleeves is lined with digitally printed silk habotai left over from “Lady of the Lake.” The piece is completely lined and the hem is interfaced to add stability to the light weight tropical wool. All seams are top stitched with a light blue to draw the eye about the garment. The lining features two functional pockets as well.

This piece was submitted to the National Make It With Wool competition and I am awaiting the results. I’ve included the final line sketch of “Kindred Waters” as well. I’m looking forward to getting this collection made and presented at my last student fashion show appearance! I graduate in August!
