Wool cardigan with faux fur sleeves and removable collars

Broomfield, Colo...

This blush wool version of this Burdastyle 3-2013-107 cardigan is part of my entry for the finals of Fabric Mart’s Fabricista fashion challenge 4. Our brief was to research a runway show and create a look that could theoretically fit into the show given our lifestyle.

I was inspired by the highly textured fabrics and layering of Miu Miu" and the pastel color palette of Balmain

For this sweater, I added faux fur cuffs with buttoned tabs that were so prevalent in Miu Miu’s designs. I used cover buttons covered with stretch velvet.

One thing about this pattern is that the bands are quite narrow, so you have to use tiny, tiny buttons. The narrow bands and the bulk of my wool knit was too much for my buttonhole foot. Instead, I sewed on the velvet buttons for decoration. The cardigan fastens with snap tape that I hand dyed pink and sewed on by hand.

I also added buttons on the inside of the neckline to accommodate 2 separate removable collars. One collar is made from the same faux fur as the cuffs, and the other is a vintage lace collar from my husband’s Grandmother’s stash. There are tiny elastic loops at the bottom of each collar that loop around the buttons.
