I’ve fallen madly in love with retro 1940s-50s swimwear and spent all of last night pouring over old pictures of these really amazing old bikinis. I’ve never actually made a bathing suit before, but I was like…well, it can’t hurt to try, right?

So, I rummaged around and found this cool vintage cherry printed knit and whipped out my scissors and just started cutting out shapes. And about three hours later, I had a really cool retro bikini!

I double layered the fabric and it holds up really well. I engineered the bottom to hold up on its own without using elastic like I had originally planned. I’m kind of amazed at how it turned out and I can’t wait to wear it on my next trip to the shore!

This is so divine. Please please please tell us how you did the bottoms without elastic? They look so comfortable and I would love to know the secret, if you’re willing to share?

i made them from a jersey knit, so they are stretchy, and hold up well on their own! they are very comfy!

This bikini is wonderful and the fabric choice is great for the 40’s/50’s vintage style. I have looked everywhere for a bikini like this and they are always so expensive.

I know! That’s what mostly drove me to make this, they’re insanely expensive. This didn’t cost me a penny since the fabric had been given to me! Good deal!

This is wonderful! I was just thinking about making my own bathing suit but I had decided to put it off and not risk it! Maybe I should learn something from you and just go for it??

But yes, I love the fabric and the high waited bottoms!

I also love vintage swimwear. You did a great job. I have been using a pattern and instruction book by Kwik Sew. It is really handy. Great shorts. They fit you well. I hope you make more. That is really cute.
