Velvet trim jacquard jumper dress

Broomfield, Colo...

This jumper dress (Burda World of Fashion 2-2008-112) I chose for one of my pieces I made for the final week of Fabric Mart’s Fabricista fashion challenge. Our brief was to research a runway show and create a look that could theoretically fit into the show given our lifestyle.

I was inspired by the highly textured fabrics and layering of Miu Miu" and the pastel color palette of Balmain

I liked some of the strong vertical lines created in velvet used in some of the Miu Miu pieces. I incorporated that idea into this dress by adding velvet trim along each of the princess lines in the front (and also the neckline).

I cut strips of the velvet and folded each in half lengthwise. Hand basting holds each piece of trim together. After making each piece of trim, more hand basting attaches each line of trim to the jacquard. The trim on the button tabs comes to mitres in the corners. I used a beading needle to tack down the trim to the body of the dress. As I was doing this, I tried to catch just the bottom layer of the velvet.
