Description

Boho Maxi Dress – Burdastyle 06/2010 #117

I got two medium sarongs from the op-shop for one buck each, both made from similar gauze-like material, and I stitched them together to make a print-blocked dress. I lined the bodice with batiste-type fabric from my vintage stash. This dress took a bit of planning and fussing to arrange the prints and seam inserts, and its missing a third tier as I didn’t have enough material or a third sarong. I transferred most of the fringing from the sarong, inserting them into the seams, section-seams, and edges of the dress, rather than purchasing lace trim, straightening them up over the gathers. I also hand stitched each individual tassel, removed from the pink sarong, to the top bodice edge. The empire bodice was too tight as I’ve put weight on; I planned to just make it slip over but I was forced to insert a (non invisible) back zipper, which stops just at the bottom tier. Location: Birkenhead.

Material Notes

2x medium-sized cheesecloth/muslin/gauze sarongs (black, white and yellow sarong with fringed edging made in India, & pink and black sarong with tassels made in Bali); lightweight white batiste/cotton lawn for lining; black long plastic zipper.

just been cropping my carefully styled photos so they might look super snazzy, but i hope that isn’t conceited of me lol! I got the pics done outside the library, the sun was hot, but the shadows were cold! The black & white tier of the dress is sheer lol, but it makes it great for wearing to the beach, over swimmers.

thank you lovely! those little fuzzy bits were tricky to pin down but don’t they really make the dress (they were already part of the sarong) haha xx

I think it looks great without the third tier. Excellent upcycle, the print is funky!
