Description

The next in my Sewing Through the Decades challenge: 1980s. This could have gone seriously wrong (I mean, many of us here have some pretty humiliating photographic evidence of how very wrong the ’80s were as a fashion decade), but I found a pretty neutral, timeless sort of pattern.

The faux-wrap bodice really called for a fabric with some directionality to it, and luckily I had 4m of this vintage polyester – more than enough to make the dress, with plenty left over for another project. Since the cross-over in the bodice is so high, I opted to leave it free rather than stitching it down as per the directions. I also had to top stitch rather than understitch the facings because the polyester would not take a crease and had a mind of it’s own. Topstitching was the only way to keep this sucker in line. I shortened it to above knee length to modernize it a bit, and left off the casing and elastic in the waist. I’ll always be using a belt of some sort anyway, and it seemed more comfortable without.

Material Notes

Vintage polyester (1972) from The Best Estate Sale Ever; Vogue pattern 7743.
