Thift Store Thursday: The Modern Luau Frock

I tend to sew my Thrift Thursday’s on Thursday morning so that’s why I tend to post a little late. But that’s how fast thrift store finds are to finish, just a few stitches and DONE!

Again, let me preface this series with a disclaimer. These are NOT refashions. Or at least I don’t consider them to be. These are simple things that YOU can do to thrift store finds to make them look good.

If found this shirt for $1.50 at the Salvation Army. Yes, it was previously a SHIRT! See below pic. All I did was add a 6" piece of red material at the bottom. It was also a little large so I took it in on the sides.
If you find a great ‘tunic’ sized shirt at the thrift store, try adding a piece of contrasting material to the bottom. The ones that cinch in the back with a sash are the usually the best.

What I liked about the shirt was that it was a stretchy material. I’ve been leaning toward stretchy dresses recently. Not because I can’t fit into my old clothes but because they’re just easier to move in, right?! And since I’m staying at home more often, I have less reason to get all dressed up. But I still like to look nice so knit dresses are currently my new favorite. BUT, unfortunately, a lot of knit things are well….trashy. At least the inexpensive stuff is. So when I come across something that looks nice and is stretchy I consider it to be a good find.

this is wonderful. I see these style tunics often in op shops and don’t buy them because I don’t care for them. But with your clever transformation, you have have made a wonderful dress. I will look again at these tops next time I see one!

What a gorgeous transformation! And I thought it was impossible to anything other than spaghetti strap or mumuu dresses at thrift stores. Guess you just have to look beyond the dress rack!

So with Grey on this one – you are so darn talented and gorgeous. This is fab. A true inspiration to us all to get our butts out there and hit the thrift stores (or as we call them where I reside “Opt-Shops”).

So know what you’re talking about “stretchy” and “trashy” – however, this find is a GEM Darl, an absolute GEM!

    Fab, fab, fab!

You are so damn talented it makes me horribly jealous!! I love it. I would go to the thrift stores here but they don’t really have them and when they do the clothes quite often cost more then you can find for new. I really love your creation- I love watching what you are up to and it makes me have hope!! Practice and time… thats my mantra. Thanks for sharing and don’t stop…. I have green eyes for a reason!

What a great refashion – yes, it is a refashion! I gave my sister a top similar to this style, but I would have transformed it this way had I seen your wonderful new dress. I love the combination of colors and how you gave the shirt a chance to continue as a nice classy dress.
