The Tehachapi Dress: Butterick B5211

Added May 22, 2011

by wildcatspow

Astoria, New Yor...

This is Butterick B5211 (view B, sans self-belt). This was my first sewn item of clothing since I was a child! I didn’t do a perfect job by any means, but it was a great learning experience for me and I can’t wait to start a new project! Lesson #1: fabric choice! I didn’t realize that this loose tunic would look so awful in chambray— it really looks like it’s a standard-issued uniform for a women’s prison or mental institution! It would probably be much cuter in a cool print— maybe I’ll have to make another one!

Blogged about it here, if you’re interested.

Definitely add a bright accessory – orange or a bright yellow or lime green would look cool. Shape is good, well done.

Oooh, thanks, ladies— good call with the necklace idea! I’m generally pretty bad at accessorizing (and usually wear pretty unisex outfits— this whole fashion thing is totally new to me!), so I hadn’t even thought of that! Thanks, guys!!

I agree with Tasallison – a necklace would make your outfit shine! I really like your dress and I don’t think the fabric is a problem as long as you accessorize it properly! I think you did a great job and you’re going to look great.

I think it’s pretty. I agree with tasallison, I bet a bright accent would make this outfit. Good job!
