The Hong Kong Dress

Added Sep 28, 2013

Groningen, Nethe...

Pfew. My hours of fitting, tracing, cutting and sewing have paid off.
The fit of the pattern is great except for the armholes (too small) and the neckline (the two V’s make the shoulders drop to the sides. I would recommend making the back V a high neckline instead) I did an FBA and some small adjustments recommended by another Burdastyler (thanks!). I like how this dress fits!
The instructions for the vent are just weird. I would recommend using the great tutorial from the lovely lady Colleen G Lea (fashionsewingblog). It definitely helped me.
As you can see I bound all the seams Hong Kong style. I was surprised how easy this method is but unfortunately this method costs lots and lots of precious sewing time. Eventually I started hating my sewing machine so I will have a little ‘sewing break’.. Maybe 2 days hehe.

Some things I learned during the process that may help you in the future:
> If there are techniques in the sewing instructions that you haven’t practiced before it’s a good time to make a toile/muslin! This has prevented a lot errors for me.
> Don’t forget to stay stitch armholes too. My armhole facings didn’t fit in the armholes anymore.
> Don’t use cheap (polyester) bias binding because it can be rough on your skin. You better cut strips from a lightweight fabric yourself for Hong Kong binding. Also check how the fabric feels against your skin (mine is quite itchy).

If you have questions about the pattern or techniques feel free to send me a message.

Material Notes

Very itchy fabric, but oh well…

I am a tad late in adding my congratulations, but the dress is beautiful on you. What a terrific job, and the Hong Kong seams, Wow. Great work, I think you can sit back for a day or so and enjoy!

Beautiful work! Hong Kong seams are so tedious and time consuming. Very well done and perfectly even!

I commend you on a job well done. I always find little mistakes in my work, even when other people can’t. It looks great on you, though.

Thank you! Yes even this dress has mistakes; I was in a hurry to get the dress finished for my grandma’s birthday party. The armhole bindings are a bit off.. :(

very nice dress and it fits you perfect. I also like the Hong Kong finish, good work! I always make a muslin first, when sewing a new pattern. This way I avoid ripping the fashion fabric, which is more time-consuming than the muslin.
