The Great Gatsby

Melbourne, Austr...

My first attempt at the Gatsby cap. It’s not for myself, as you can see it’s a bit big for my head!

I found the instructions a bit tricky to follow, especially what to do with the band piece, but I eventually worked it out based on the head circumference if was making it for. The instructions made no mention about stiffening the fabric or even what to use to stiffen the visor. So what I ended up doing was to line all the main pieces with Pellon/fusible fleece and used both Pellon and buckram for the visor.

Material Notes

Main: Black and White houndstooth wool blend.
Lining: Black pure linen.
Pellon/Fusible fleece.
Buckram for the visor.

There is one step that needs to be done at the end. I did not do this step properly because the instructions were not specific enough. It was my “hat crazy” brother who told me that the visor has to be stitched down all around the front of the cap so that it does not gape like a crocodile’s mouth! If you see the Burdastyle model, there is no gap at the front like mine. I have also examined a real life hat. It has to be done by hand stiching.
