Sweet Ruffled Trench

I saw a trench coat at Anthropologie that I absolutely adored, but it was out of my price range. I set to designing something similar using this trench coat as my inspiration and the lovely Hikaru jacket pattern as my base design.

To make this jacket, I altered the Hikaru pattern substantially. I used size 42 for the bust, 40 for the waist, and 44 for the hip. I also moved up the waist line seam 4 inches so that it would sit at my natural waist for a more flattering fit. This was the first project that I decided to spend the time to do a muslin, and I’m really glad I did! I found the HIkaru pattern fit quite large, so I had to do the muli-size alterations so that it was a better shape for me.

I added a storm flap with a pleat to the back of the jacket, and a storm flap connected to a ruffle at the front. It took me a while to get the ruffle just right – it’s basically a circle with the front storm flap shape attached on top, so to visualize the pattern piece was a little confusing at first! It took me about 5 tries. I also added a waist tie and waist tie holders to the waist of the jacket.

I used a silver coloured metal zipper and pewter buttons that I found off of Etsy.com. I love them!

As a finishing touch, I lined the jacket in a vintage-looking yellow floral cotton. I love surprise linings, and yellow is my current favourite colour for spring.

Overall, I am quite happy with how the project turned out. It feels beautiful to wear and it fits me quite well. It’s my perfect spring jacket!
