Sweet Dreams Top

Simpsonville, So...

This top is a recon from vintage pillowcases my Mother-in-Law gave me.

The bust of this top gave me so many problems. The top is lined since the fabric is so thin and I used pattern pieces from a dress pattern I have to make the bust pieces. Even though I enlarged the pattern it still didn’t come out quite right. It was supposed to connect at the top in the back but didn’t so I made fabric covered elastic straps to bridge the gap, which means I can’t wear a bra with it unless I wear something over it. I think I may have done my gathers in the bust too tight and it took out too much of the extra room I needed.

As for the rest of the top, I used the decorative edge of the pillowcases to make the bodice piece under the bust. It buttons in the back and flows open underneath.

Overall I like the way the top came out. I just wish it looked as nice on me as it does my dress form, even though it won’t button on her. I may try making something with a similar bust again to see if I can get it work. Any tips anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

I looked at the pics first and thought that the back was deliberately done in this way. It looks interesting, unusual and I think your idea with elastic bands works very well. The top is very nice, very feminine.

Maybe, when you sew your next one, you can interface the bust part and sew it like a sort of bra, more rigid or something. Maybe than you won’t need a bra at all?

That is a great idea. I will definitely keep that in mind for the next time. Thanks for the tip.

I think you have done a good job – and I like the fabric of the pillowcases :)
