A little spring dress I made to try out the pattern I want to use to make my daughter a dress for her first birthday party. Only the bodice is from the pattern. The skirt was just the rectangle of fabric left over after making the bodice.

I made the smallest size and it’s still huge! I’d love some advice on how to make infant clothing the right size. Everything I’ve made for her has been too big.

Material Notes

2/3 yd of fabric purchased for $1 from the remnant bin at Walmart, zipper purchased so long ago I don’t remember where it came from, ribbons scavenged from a Victoria’s Secret shopping bag

I assume you are using a pattern that has seam allowance included? I find that the seam allowance given is always more than I (by habit of using my foot as a guide) use. My suggestion is to go down a size maybe, or actually do the full seam allowance that is stated when sewing.

And you can always add a little elastic on the waist at the back or sides on the inside to give a better fit

You have done a beautiful job – and at least she will grow into it! If it were too small, you would be in tears!

Here’s an idea, go find one of her baby dresses that’s old but is the right size, take it apart, press it out and make a pattern from it by tracing around each piece on paper or muslin. Then cut out a dress by this pattern. Make it something simple that goes together easy. If you don’t have one, maybe you can find one at the thrift store cheap to use. I hope this helps!
