Simple Wedding Dress

Cincinnati, Ohio...

This summer I had the pleasure of making my sister’s wedding dress! It was such a fantastic experience, and so much pressure knowing that it had to be perfect.

She had the wedding on her organic farm in Cincinnati (if you’re around, check out Finn Meadows Farm in Montgomery), so she wanted something simple and comfortable. She picked an embroidered cotton from JoAnn’s who classified it as an “eyelet”, but it doesn’t have any actual eyelets. It’s beautiful fabric, though! I started with two different patterns and modified the heck out of them, so much so that it doesn’t really even matter that I started with a pattern… She knew what she wanted, so that’s what I made her. I used a voile (very very lightweight) to both underline and line the dress. It has a waistband (covered with her ribbon) and small train, which we bustled for the reception. She wanted something convertible (to knee length), but we didn’t have nearly enough time to create it. I also matched the fabric at the waistband seams which was quite an adventure :)

I’m so so happy with how it turned out! It fit her almost perfectly, which was the point with such a simple dress, really. I think we did about 6 fittings to get it right.

Also, because I know that I would want to see more (but maybe I’m just a wedding junkie), I included a pic of the reception setting and the bridesmaids (I made my own dress, and my mom made my other 2 sisters’). Sorry, I have no better pictures of them yet, but when I do I will post them.

Material Notes

Embroidered cotton, Cotton voile, lots and lots of muslin :)

Evening Wear
