Shuuka Track Jacket

Added Jul 16, 2013

by youndalin

Chicago, Illinoi...

Made this for my husband’s birthday using Burda Style’s Amin #6029 pattern. Used a standard length of Shuuka flannel worn by the Maasai people in Kenya and added a black cotton inner lining for added warmth. He loved his present!

I passed the pattern off, when I saw it, because the chunky knit was a huge turn off, I didn’t see the potential in this like you did. I think this pattern is perfect for my hubby’s commuter jacket. Thank you for opening my eyes to this :D

Thanks! Glad I was able to make you think twice about this project. Hope it works out for you and that you (and your husband) end up liking it as much as I did!

Would never know this was your first jacket—nice work! Did you alter the pattern or fit the jacket? On the Burdastyle model, it looks like the pattern has way too much ease, but looks perfect on your husband.

Thanks so much for the compliment! I didn’t purposely alter the pattern too much (just tried to lengthen the sleeves as my husband has long arms too) … but being my first jacket, I did end up having to fudge some seams here and there. :p

Very well done and the fabric is beautiful, did you actually bring it back from Kenya? Did you pick up more exotic fabrics on your travels? I liked reading about your adventurous life!

Wow. Thanks so much!! I’ve actually been living in Kenya for the past year (despite what my profile says) so I’ve been very fortunate to have access to all kinds of beautiful fabric here. But yes, the jacket was made with actual Kenyan shuuka fabric.

Thanks so much! It was my first time making a jacket. Definitely an exercise in patience but it turned out better than I thought!

Thanks for the kind words. I can’t take credit for the color choice as my husband picked it out himself. I’ll pass along your comment though.
