Simplicity 1997: Misses’ and Women’s One-Piece Dress and Coat: Smart season spanning ensemble. Dress – both views – has bodice with high round neckline and tie collar that fastens in a bow at front. Dress has short kimono sleeves and opening at front neckline. Slim skirt has soft pleat at center front and 3 pleats at either side of center. Collarless coat is lined and features short kimono sleeves that turn back to form cuff.

Don’t you just love that description! Smart and season spanning!

This is a pretty basic dress, and the instructions, while not as detailed as some contemporary patterns, are definitely possible for a beginner with a bit of vintage know-how to figure out.

This is my first factory-fold vintage pattern! It was very reassuring to purchase this beauty on ebay, knowing that all of the pieces would be present and in great condition!

This dress uses a facing on the front skirt edge, but not the back. I have never come across anything like this before. When I first looked at the skirt pieces, I thought they must be cut incorrectly because the back was significantly longer than the front pieces. Silly, me, what did I think the facing piece was for! Has anyone else come across this construction before. Why would someone not want a facing on the back skirt edges? Does anyone know?

If I make this up again, I would extend the front neck opening a bit – as it is, I need to get the dress over my head before I do my hair because it is a tight fit!

Someday I will absolutely take a stab at the coat.

And, as always, more pictures may be found over on my blog, Lilacs & Lace.

The side zipper offers an uninterrupted flattering fit.

You finished the inside so beautifully, perhaps a few inside-out shots are called for.

This is undoubtedly one of your best efforts, and that’s saying something.
