Shibori Shirt

San Francisco, C...

I took a Shibori class last summer to learn the techniques of using Indigo Dye on fabrics. I hand stitched the light gray fabric (1.5 yds) in order to manipulate the fabric and indigo dye. I had just enough fabric to make a sleeveless shirt that I self drafted/designed. It’s very simple but just right since it is designed to flatter a pear shape body.

Pattern: Self Draft (Using My Measurements).
Fabric: 100% Cotton in Light Gray (hard to see)
Stitch: Randomly Hand Stitching (but with the same lenght/width and space inbtwn)

Garment Type
Beach, Casual

I love your top; an amazing job on both the pattern drafting and the Shibori!! Any chance of sharing the pattern – the style would work well with my body type. :-)

Thank you! I don’t mind sharing as long as you don’t mind waiting for the pattern in standard size(s). This is drafted to my measurements, so the fit wouldn’t be right. Also, I never uploaded a pattern before so that alone will need a little researching on.

Thank you! I don’t know any websites or books for Shibori since the teacher done all the prep work. The teacher name is Ana Lisa Hedstrom that i’ve taken the shibori/natural dye class with. There some examples and pics on my flickr acct. We used wooden clamps (you can get at anywhere) and clamp down the fabrics for dye resisting. Handstitching is another method and even the sewing machine will work too! Hope this helps.

This is beautiful! I recently did my own self Shibori dyed project, I used Burda Style’s Naomi jacket, I never would have been so brave as to draft my own pattern! This is so lovely! Yay for beautiful hand made shibori!

That’s awesome! Shibori is time consuming but the results are amazing. You can always start slowly and draft something basic (tank top will be great start) and build onto it when you understand the patternmaking concept. You can do it!
