Great jacket! How soft is the leather? LeahterHideStore.com lists it as upholstery leather so I’m wondering.

Yes, it is upholstery leather. I had never worked much with leather before this jacket, and didn’t know there were different finishes depending on the project before I made this (someone emailed me after I posted on my blog and let me know). I didn’t have an issue with it and I love it for my jacket. It wouldn’t be good for a skirt or the like, but I think it’s great for outwear. I have no regrets and would do it again. But it is upholstery leather, and does feel a lot more stiff than a smaller hide I picked up at Mood (and still haven’t used). I’d say it drapes more like vinyl than fabric. Does that help at all?

a quick addendum to my last reply: I just compared it to some vinyl that I have. The vinyl is much more stiff, so that was a bad comparison. The LeatherHideStore.com sent me samples of various leathers (they will send out whatever swatches you request), and I just chose one that felt soft and supple. I also spoke with Jennifer at LeatherHideStore.com about this, and she said she’d be happy to discuss it with anyone who has questions or concerns. They are a GREAT company with fantastic customer service. They sent me my hide in exchange for my post, but I completely recommend them without any hesitation, business and blogging aside.

Thanks so much for the info. I’m so inspired by your jacket that I’m considering doing a leather piece. I have worked with leather as trims but never a full garment.
