RINGS OF AUTUMN WISDOM - recycled handwoven mat / rug

My mum recently told me of some creative recycling projects my great grandmother used to engage in (in old Mother Russia), involving any old unwanted or no longer useful clothes, rags and bed linen. She used to cut these unwanted items into strips and hand weave them to make useful, practical and interesting new mats and rugs!

I thought I’d try my hand in it, and keep the family tradition alive! I was pleasantly surprised by how hypnotic this activity was. Definitely therapeutic – so I thought it was only fitting that the end result becomes a sitting or meditation mat.

This is the second largest of the 3 mats I will be sharing today – although the reds and oranges are absent, the colours still feel autumnal to me – rich chocolate browns mixed with azure and royal blue, pale green and splashes of white – like autumn by the sea. When laying together with the other two mats, I can see crop circles and the iconic shapes of Aboriginal art. I hope that both the colours and softness of the rug under someone else’s feet make that someone feel happy and comfortable.

In keeping with both my personal ethics – that of being a good greenie – and my great grandmother’s ethics – must not waste a single thread – I used only unwanted, found and second hand materials to make the rugs. The colour combinations turned out marvellous, and I hope that someone else enjoys using my little mats/ rugs as much as I enjoyed making them!

This mat measures approximately 27 inches in diameter.
