Retro + MadMen inspired dress

San Diego, Calif...

I was watching MadMen and decided that I could make one of the awesomely feminine dress featured on the show. I used Butterick B5813 then deviated way too much.

When I get back to the supply store I’m going to add Frogs as a final final touch since I didn’t use the collar.
If I ever make this again I’m not using all 28 darts, probably taking the lining out of the sleeves and I might try adding the collar.

Overall this was above my skill level but fun.

Material Notes

This was my first experiment with lining. I hate lining.

Well done the dress looks really good on you, great colour choice. I’ve just purchased the pattern for a 50s wedding i’m going to and as i’m a size 20 its nice to see how the dress works on the larger lady

Thank you. I am so not afraid of my curves it’s scary. The 50’s and 60’s work so well with larger women.
Just remember it’s 1956 size 20 and not today’s you might have to make adjustments or go up a size.

Definitely worth the shape. But there are one or two pars of darts that don’t work on me. So next time I’ll have to tweak the pattern to not need them.

Do you still have the dress? I’d love to see it.

Thank you so much!!! I actually had to modify the size. I’m a today’s size 22-24 squeezing in to 1956 size 22. I had to cut the pattern apart and add extender panels into it so that I could fit it properly. I did a 1/2 to the top and a full inch to the bottom.

I’d recommend if you try this pattern stick with solids I was going to go with a print in that same color pink with blue and purple flowers. I’m glad I didn’t.
