Raindrop Coat on a Lady Grey Day

Added Feb 15, 2010

by sunnilj9

Cedar City, Utah...

I was a pattern tester for the Lady Grey Coat from Colette Patterns. I initially tested this pattern with muslin and then laid it aside with intentions of making it from something fabulous later on. One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to finish unfinished sewing projects and I felt this fell into that category. The coat turned out beautifully and I’m so happy with the finish. This coat is rated “Advanced” and I suppose that it is to a certain degree, but the fantastic instructions make you feel like it is for a beginner. I highly recommend this coat pattern to anyone!
In the initial construction of the muslin test, the sleeves were too big for the armhole. I corrected this on the muslin but then forgot to correct my pattern, hence why my sleeves are gathered at the top when the pattern does not call for it. I was too lazy to fix this for the finished jacket and felt that the sleeves would be just fine in the end if gathered. I also gave the sleeve a pleat at the elbow since they were a bit large-ish for my arms.
All in all, I’m completely in love with this romantic coat. I thought the large collar would drown me, but I find that the flared waist to hip area gives this coat great balance. A perfect addition to a rainy day and some warm Lady Grey tea.

Just making the Lady Grey at the moment.

Can I ask, did you find that you needed to shorten the pockets?

I have just turned my hem 2 inches and have found that the pockets peak out of the bottom, even though I have trimmed the pocket SA right back.

Thank you! I totally agree about the peplum and really I can’t believe how well it balances out the collar. I think coat is so well designed as everything about it gives it that hourglass figure.

Yes! I saw one lone pair there awhile back (target) and thought, “What are these doing here? They look marvelous!” Bought them right up. Seems like they go with nearly everything. Love that mustardy color.

I have this coat 90% finished myself (has been that way for about 2 months now!), mostly because it’s not thin-coat weather yet. I had the same problem with the sleeves. I like your sleeve-solution a lot. mine is navy wool, which after seeing yours now seems a bit boring to me! I love the colors you chose, both in and outside. your coat definitely inspires to finish mine soon!

Oh, I’m sure the navy would be so beautiful. Really. I did actually try looking for a navy wool and could never find just the right fabric. I saw this fabric at a “two dollar fabric store” and knew it was the perfect thing for me. But, I buy this color alot. It’s that color I love but never own up to really loving it. Thank you!

This is gorgeous! I love the colour, and the pattern is very well balanced to make the collar very complimentary and not at all overwhelming. Beautfully sewn finish too :)

Oh yes! Do try it. I’m sure you will find the directions so easy to follow. The hardest part for me was cutting out all of the pieces. And yes there are alot! Took me 3 hours! So worth it in the end though.
