Plaid mini dress

Pittsburgh, Penn...

I bought this retro plaid on etsy and just had to make a mini dress out of it (even though I’m getting a bit too old to wear something so short, at least not to work). I used New Look 6000 as a base pattern because I wanted a bodice shaped only by darts. I toyed with the ideas of short sleeves, a collar, or pockets, but ended up keeping it as simple as possible. The plaid is loud enough on its own!

I made a muslin and quite a few changes for my petite figure. The neckline ended up gaping anyway, so I had to add neck darts.

There are wrinkles going from my hips (which are high are narrow) to the widest area of my butt. I’m not sure if I have a swayback or if this is a “prominent buttocks” issue alone (I thought I’d steal someone else’s wording for that one!). I think it’s too late to fix this properly, but I might lower the back darts a bit. Any other ideas?

Material Notes

Wool-like but probably synthetic; it’s loose woven and fused to a white backing

i agree with the previous posts! it looks fantastic and you can definately pull that one off missy! As for the sway back, from what i learnt last year in my fitting course, i believe that would be the technical term….or code word for large buttom….i had the same issue! there is an alteration you can do where you slash into the centre back and pivot some area out and then re-true the pattern. also in this case, as the drag lines seem to be pulling towards the hip, it may also be that there is not enough ease around the hipline? If there is less that 5cm total then that could be the issue :s but i think that no one, besides us perfectionists would ever notice! especially with such fantastically distracting fabric! Oh and as for the neck darts, they can be pivotted out too! its super simple! anywho, the main thing here is that…. you rock this dress!!!

I have read that swayback is different from but easily confused with a number of other things, such as having a large bottom.
I didn’t notice the neck problem until I had put the dress together – next time I’ll know to take that area into consideration ahead of time.

Are you kidding me? Too old to wear this? You look gorgeous! I loooooove this fabric, must have been hard to work with though, yet somehow you pulled it off, and it looks amazing. Super job!

Ha, okay, I know I’m not really too old to wear it. But I hope to teach high school soon and I’ll need to look older and more professional so that I can command some respect! Thanks for the comment!
