♫ ♪ Pink Elephants

I had this super colorful plaid fabric for a couple of years.. Just sitting in my stash and waiting for a right moment.. From the start, I only knew that I would want to make a dress out of it.. Every few months I would pull out the fabric, look at it, and put it back.. Things become more clear after I hand dyed some fabric, and with it white embroidered cotton eyelet trim.. It came out in this beautiful blue color, which instantly reminded me of the fabric, and it was a perfect match.. All that was left was to finally pick up the dress pattern.. I played it safe by choosing pattern #133 from Burda 12/2012, which I used twice before (Blue Light and Something Changed)..

Placing the dress pattern was a bit tricky.. The fabric is cotton, width of 1.10m, which is smaller than usual, and I bought 2m of length.. I laid out the fabric on the floor, and I’m sure that I stared at it for an hour or two, trying to figure out how to make it work.. That’s when I remembered the song from Dumbo – Pink elephants, and just couldn’t get it out of my head.. I knew that I wanted to sew the trim at the edge of the skirt.. There were some trim left, so I thought that it would be good to place it at the shoulders..

Oh my. . I have a similar fabric. I am just unsure what I want to make, at first I was thinkinkg shorts but now that I saw your dress I might just do that. I thought maybe it would be overwhelming with all the colors but your dress came out so beautiful especially with the lace detail. It gives it character.

thank you very much :) I was also a bit worried how this fabric would look as a dress, but I couldn’t think of anything better.. my best advice – take a simple pattern, because you’ll have a lot of matching to do if you want everything to look nice..

How sweet is this! It must have been difficult working with this asymetric plaid, particularly when you don’t have enough fabric, but you managed it! The lace trim is a nice counterpart to the fabric. Do you wear a petticoat underneath on the first picture?

Thank you very much :) It’s true that matching everything to make sense wasn’t easy with this fabric.. I had a lot of practice playing with prints and stripes :)
I’m not wearing petticoat.. The location where I take photos is usually more or less windy, and so I end up with fun photos of skirts :)
