Pants with Frankenzipper

Added Dec 28, 2010

by joost52

Brussels, Belgium

I never made any garment before (actually, I did make a skirt once, I should put it up some day) so I decided to try my hand on a pair of pants.
They are based on a Burda pattern I bought for this project, and I sure learned a lot in the project. One thing I’ve learned is that the zipper is friggin’ hard. I couldn’t wrap my head around the (brief) instructions that came with the pattern and ended up just improvising.
So, in the end I have pants that have a zipper that is a bit special. But I kind of like it, as the pattern was way too classic for me anyway :)
Next time though, things should look better :)

Note: The third picture is before the pants were fully completed. But I added it because jsanga wanted a picture of the entire thing ;)

Material Notes

Based on Burda pattern 7841. The fabric is some ‘wool-like’ fake thing, but I don’t remember what exactly.

Good save! The best internet tutorial I’ve seen on installing a fly zipper is this one

I look it up every single time I put one in. :)

hahaha its very clear and easy to see why the zipper comes out without that little help. There is one seam missing to wit that one which you see on every other pants. You know? That topstich which fasten up the left zipper side at the outer side of the pants.

    So long Basti

however i like this way too….a little trickier on bathroom trips, but much more unique and a great new detail!

Japps, this way is not bad but how you said… a bit tricky in some situations ;) but interesting to see how people go on on problems :)

I agree, it needs some work :) But I am totally putting it in my next pants though :)
And actually, it opens very easy, no problems in the bathroom ;)

Dude, I love these pants! I don`t know what went wrong with your zipper, but it turned out awesome. This little detail there made your pants very unique. I would love to wear that myself.

This is cool. So is there a zipper installed or not? Or does the latch keep the pants closed?

There is a zipper, but it would show. The latch makes sure the fabric covers up the zipper ;)

i love the idea you had to play with the little problems with your zipper. after all, it is all about creativity and not too much about perfection. the result is a great pair of pants, that is all what counts!

Funny that should come from the master of perfection,
but seriously, this pare are so cool looking, stylish and sexy, who needs those boring zippers anyway.

very clever :P haha. Do you have any pics of the full pants? what’s nice is that this is going to draw attention to your groin area and you’ll be getting a lot of looks in that direction. :P Way to go!

Thanks :) I’ve added a picture of the full pants, although before I added the zipper thingie.
I didn’t think of the looks it would draw I must admit, but maybe I should wear them on bad hairdays, since people won’t be looking at my hair anyway ;)
