Added Sep 18, 2012

Brisbane, Australia

Summer is just around the corner in Australia and the sun here is very harsh, so I have made a cool cotton voile shirt which will be cool to wear and care for my very pale skin as well. This pattern was lovely to make up and the cotton voile a pleasure to sew.

Material Notes

Cotton voile from Spotlight
Shell buttons

Spring, Summer, Fall
Garment Type
Casual, Classic

They do and I have to eat humble pie because I am an anti Spotlight snob. I only went there because I needed a zip and thread for a project and I happen to be driving past. I love service and you don’t get service there, so I pay a bit more elsewhere. But since buying this voile, I have been back and found a great piece of stretch cotton sateen for some capri pants. Humble pie isn’t so bad after all. (still no service!!)

Thanks again Ralf. Yes, summer isn’t too many weeks away and then I will start complaining about the heat!! I was in Europe in June and July and it wasn’t such a great summer it seems. I always feel sorry for Europeans when the summer is lousy as I know you all look forward to it so much.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I used the above/ right pattern or if you have the April 2010 Burda magazine number110. It isn’t a difficult shirt to make and I am going to make another in the next week as it was such a lovely pattern.

That is sweet of you. I doubt that I will be the belle of Brisbane but I will be cool in this shirt and look respectable! The store where I bought this fabric is not my favourite shop. It is full of junk most of the time so I was very lucky to find this fabric. It feels like Liberty and sewed up like Liberty.

I’m going to have to pop into spotlight! That voile is delightful :) I’ve got some voile in my stash intended for a long sleeved shirt like this… I might have to push it a bit further up the sewing ‘to-do’ list after seeing this :) What finish did you use on the cuffs?

Hi Melanie, I am not a fan of Spotlight but I think I struck gold with this piece of fabric. It was so lovely to sew and ironed perfectly. As for the cuffs, I just did as per pattern I think. I have been making shirts for years, so I just made them as I always have for a women’s shirt. It sounds sexist, but for a man’s shirt, I would put a lot more detail into the placket and cuff but since this is a casual shirt, as simple as possible. It is a very easy shirt to make.
