Oklahoma costumes

Kanata, Canada

These are some costumes I designed and made for a community theatre production of Oklahoma! The bodice of the brown gingham and orange costume was from a vintage Simplicty pattern child’s top – the skirt was a circular tablecloth.
The yellow dress was cut from Simplicity 2444 with a double ruffle added at the bottom to give it more of a period feel. The blue dress was cut from Simplicity pattern 3723. The remaining child’s dress came completely from my head – I used several cotton valances given to me by my friend’s grandmother and cut and fitted until we had the costume – she loved it!

Material Notes

Orange and brown gingham – cotton/polyester circular tablecloth, vintage brown gingham taffeta
Yellow – cotton print, cotton/polyester broadcloth
Blue – cotton print
Cream print – cotton kitchen valances

Garment Type
Cotton, Blends, Rayon

Love it! Reminds me of “little house on the prairie”! I loved that show…

Great costumes, especially for a community theatre. (Not implying that community theatre is bad, but the budgets are!)

You are right about that – although this particular group isn’t as rigid as others I’ve worked with, I’m always conscious of the cost!

Excellent job! You did great on the dress made without a pattern.

Thank-you – the little girl is an absolute doll, so I really wanted to come up with something she would love to wear – and she does – her Mum told me that she didn’t want to give the costume back!

These costumes look great! My daughters do community theater and I am always looking for good patterns for that time period.
